But I really fell deeply in love with them when we arrived. The smokies are a beautiful place. When we arrived and the grandeur of the smokies was all around me. It's such a quiet place so serene. Richard you have done a spectacular job and truly have a gift. Keep up the good work. I noticed while scrolling through the guestbook that there is only one other Kansan who replied, I believe that anyone who visits the smokies will fall in love with them no matter where they are from. Comments: I did a search on AOL,looking for a buttercup. I was astounded when I found your site. I have emailed you hoping we can use your picture of a buttercup. I explained why we wanted and we would be proud to add a link to the Mable Ruth Anheuser site as soon as we can have one set up. It will be a tour house, a place to study the Mississippi River and a Bed and Breakfast. A group of horse people will be using the riding rink to help teach handicapped children to ride and learn about horses. I'm 40 now and visit the Smokies every year we get the chance, hoping to find my ticket to move back to the mountains. I'm a photographer myself, and take the camera where ever I go. My mother's father was Giles Walker who was a brother to John Walker, the father of the famous Sisters. The only time I was actually there was in the 1940s while the 5 sisters were still all alive.
I am also a photographer. I've had some good shots, but yours are not "good" they are stupendous!!!

Richard Replies: The black frame allows the photos to be displayed in their normal resolution. If you would like the photos displayed full screen, use the "Settings" button on you Windows Screensaver Dialog box. You can adjust all screensaver settings, including the delay and how the transitions occur!

Richard replies: May is a great time to visit the Park. Look for native azaleas and rhododendron in the higher elevations ( above 3000 ft.) You might also be able to find a few trilliums up there early in the month. Late Spring is a great time to enjoy fresh, vigorous growth and cool to pleasant temperatures.
A visit to Clingman's Dome will give you a great overview of the Park, and then you can take the two mile hike to Andrews Bald. It's a short trip that you won't forget.
Don't forget your camera, and have it loaded and ready at all times ... anything can happen. Have a great time and enjoy your visit!

Third rocking chair on the right was my spot. I still go back every chance I get to visit it and spend a few moments sitting on the porch.

Comments: Photo 107 brought back some of my fondest childhood memories. For five or six years in the late eighties and early nineties my family and I had the extreme privilege of spending a week in the summer there. The cabin was owned by a Mrs. Miller of Knoxville, who passed away about 7 or 8 years ago. She was a friend of my grandmother, and was generous enough to let us stay there with her and my cousins. We would play by the creek, building "water parks" and every day walk down to the swimming hole (now destroyed-- there was a dam), and walk the dogs in the evenings. The bottom story was a horse stable years ago, I believe a commercial one. The upper part was originally just a loft for the hay, but was converted into three bedrooms, two baths, a living room, kitchen, and dining room. I've climbed in the upstairs window a few times since it was taken back by the Park Service, and I'm always surprised at how basic and rustic it seems, cause as a child it seemed wonderful. My most vivid memory of the place was when a black bear came out of the woods when we were grilling salmon, and all we had between us and him was a screen door. Luckily, he went away, because the rangers were indifferent over the phone. Thank you for posting that picture and sharing with the entire world these special memories of mine.
